Urrao is a small coffee growing region outside of Medellin. While the area doesn't hold the same renown that Nariño does, it’s a beautiful landscape of high valleys and rich soil. Pavon, a specific area of Urrao, has slightly more name recognition as a coffee region, and it’s all because of Pablo Emilio Montoya.
In 2014, Pablo convinced a group of local farmers to enter the Cup Of Excellence as part of his community efforts. He’s long been convinced that specialty coffee is a strong path forward towards sustainable farming, and a 3rd place win in the Cup of Excellence placed the community in Pavon on the radar of specialty coffee.
When the buyer for that auction didn’t follow through with long term program, Pergamino, an exporter based out of Medellin, did. They established ties with the group through Pablo himself, and has been buying their coffees for their cafe in Medellin as well as for export.
The father and son team that run Pergamino have been close partners with Ruby since day one. They help source the coffees from San Antonio, Colombia that make up the backbone of Creamery. They also first introduced Ruby to the Rivera family leading us to be able to offer coffees from both Duvan and Over Rivera.
Being able to roast Pablo’s coffee is a great honor — as a farmer, he produces amazing coffees, but as a leader, he’s helped many farmers produce amazing coffees.
