The Gachatha Coffee Factory was established in 1963 between the villages of Muthuaini, Thiriku, Gachenge, and Kianjau. With 1,452 farmer members of the co-op coming from a variety of different villages, Gachatha Coffee Factory has greatly contributed to a bigger sense of community. Because the area is so densely populated, the waste water from washing coffee cherries is treated in soaking pits far away from local water sources to make sure water isn’t contaminated with coffee runoff.
The community also receives training and initiatives on planting native trees in the area to help preserve the existing bird life. Because the coffee factory has been in operation since 1963, daily operations are smooth. Farmers are paid for the cherry they bring to the coffee factory, but also have access to pre-financing for things like school fees or farm inputs. Cherry is sorted, washed, graded, and dried in beautifully pristine facilities, and the coffee that comes from Gachatha is stunning.
One of the amazing things about coffee from Kenya is that you get to taste coffees from the entire community blended into different lots. Not only does the community around Gachatha contribute to the greater sense of togetherness, we get to actually taste what that’s like as coffees from all 1,452 farmer members are blended into these unique lots.
