Though the Santuario farmers’ group is only three years old, it already has over 400 smallholder farmer members. Located in the geographically diverse and lush jungle areas of Cajamarca in Peru, Santuario prizes three things: farmer education, coffee quality, and organic growing practices.  In the jungles of Peru, coffee farming can be tricky. The elevation and natural biodiversity provide an amazing environment for coffee growing, however, it can be very difficult to organize the general logistics of getting coffees out of the farms and to the ports. By banding together in a larger organization, the farmer members of Santuario now have a great system for coffee transportation and marketing.  Santuario also prizes farmer education. The group regularly sends members out to visit other farms to share knowledge of farming practices and organic practices so that everyone in the group has access to proper coffee farming knowledge. By empowering its members to work together, Santuario has elevated the coffee quality for all of its members.  The group also maintains organic certification standards for its members. By following organic growing practices, Santuario has helped ensure an ecologically sustainable future for the group.
