Ndeki is one of sixteen coffee mills managed by the New Gatukuyu Farmers Coffee Society. Built in 1972, Ndeki is a slightly newer coffee factory compared to others in Kenya, and because of this, there were a lot of forward thinking elements incorporated into the planning.

Coffee is processed using clean water from the Kiri river nearby, which is then filtered before being diverted back into seepage pits where the water is reincorporated into the ecosystem without adding coffee waste runoff into the soil. These seepage pits aren’t a massive technological advance, but having the space and forward thinking when the mill was being established allowed them to be fully incorporated into the processing line with easy effort.

Ndeki caters to farmers at high elevations, especially for Kenya. With some coffees coming from around 2,000 meters above sea level, the flavor profile Ndeki is rich with dense sweetness due to the slower growing cherries and more concentrated fruit sugars.

In Kenya, because of how close to the equator the coffee land is grown, often there are multiple harvests in one year rather than just one harvest. The “fly” crop for Ndeki lasts from June through August, while the normal harvest happens between October and December.

Ndeki is a an extremely unique example of how coffees from Kenya can show diverse flavors, and makes a great new addition to Ruby’s lineup.
