María Ninfa Peñafiel Morales has a coffee farm in the Linares municipality in Nariño, Colombia. Her farm is located near the Galeras Volcano, like many other coffee farmers, and like most farmers in the region, her farm is also dedicated to growing sugarcane. Because Linares is such a small, remote region, most residents live in the countryside and work in agriculture while the municipal capitol has only 2,000 or so residents.
Working with remote farms always presents a challenge, but especially in 2021 during the current global pandemic, it can be even harder to connect to farmers growing coffee. This is the first time our exporting partner has been able to work with María to get her coffee to specialty buyers in the United States, but since local travel isn’t very safe yet, they have yet to establish strong lines of communication.
When a farmer is able to sell their coffee to a specialty coffee roaster, it not only creates the opportunity for that coffee to be purchased for a higher premium, it also establishes the opportunity to build a lasting sourcing partnership. Being able to consistently count on a buyer for your coffee means that both the farmer and the roaster can establish consistency and plan year after year for growth and stability.
We love how soft and sweet this coffee is, and we hope that we’re able to connect to María more closely next year. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this coffee as much as we do.
