Nolberto Olaya is a member of ASOPEP (Asociación de Productores Ecológicos de Planadas) which has 202 coffee farming members. Dedicated to education, every member receives access to training and education around coffee farming and good, ecological farming practices. The association also has a training program for the youth in area, focusing on quality control and coffee cupping skills to help center the focus of coffee business back in Colombia. The group also provides English lessons, and travel to coffee trade shows to expand the worldview of the next generation of coffee farmer.
Nolberto helps lead by example: his farm is managed entirely organically, and has helped pioneer new techniques like spraying trees with the liquid that seeps from worm compost bins as a secondary type of fertilizer.
Not only does Nolberto innovate environmental practices on his farm, his family also roasts coffee and sells roasted coffee in the community. By developing on site roasting, Nolberto’s family has been able to create awareness around coffee tasting and coffee quality in the association.
Nolberto’s farm has a wide swatch of coffee varieties planted, and we’re excited to see what this new partnership holds and what other coffees from his farm might be in our future.
