Finca de Dios is a very unique small farm in Fraijanes that combines tradition with modern innovation. Ellen inherited the land from her father, who had bought it to keep horses and escape from Guatemala City on the weekends. Now Ellen manages the farm with the help of her husband Stuart and daughter Ashley. They make an incredible team, with key roles in each part of the farm's life. Ellen is an agricultural engineer and focuses on environmental sustainability, plant health and general farm nutrient management; Stuart is an electrical engineer by trade, so he constructed a beautiful micro mill; Ashley has a masters in coffee science and economics and manages clients and quality assurance.
I (Jared) first visited the farm in 2012 and went back again in 2015. Over the years Ashley has done a wonderful job listening to clients and using feedback to sculpt coffees that fit their needs. She's also been actively involved in conversations around sustainability and has headed up some great projects on the farm to lead by example.
This is our fourth year buying coffee from the Prentice family and every season we are impressed. This year we've selected three micro lots that are all extremely clean, complex, and deeply sweet.
