As part of an 800 member Co-op, the Thunguri Coffee Factory employs ten people full-time and up to 20 seasonal workers. The factory helps coordinate planting and agronomy education programs from the Coffee Research Station and the ministry of agriculture while maintaining strict processing guidelines at the factory. This is very much still a coffee project in development, with the realities of running a coffee factory in rural environments limiting their ability to push these projects as fast as they’d like. With access to loans being very limited, purchasing coffee from Thunguri at higher premiums directly contributes to their access to operating capital and their ability to re-invest in new quality focused initiatives.
