The Huadquiña coffee group has been producing coffee in the La Convencion valley since 1964, but only recently have they been able to market and sell their coffees individually. Most coffee in Peru had been governed by large cooperative groups that focused on quan- tity over quality until only around ten years ago.

These large groups usually focused on securing certifications like Fair Trade and Organic as a way to drive prices forward, but as coffees were rarely sorted by quality, the opportunity for earning larger premiums was greatly hindered. As smaller groups have gained operational independence, coffee quality throughout Peru has greatly risen, as well as new opportunities for farmers.

The La Convencion valley is a 12-hour drive from the nearest town, and it spans across many peaks at extreme elevations. It’s the perfect environment for growing beautiful, bright, complex coffee, and groups like Huadquiña are only now able to pursue new opportuni- ties.

We’re grateful to be able to purchase this coffee, and we’re looking forward to the future development of these smaller groups in Peru. Coffees like Salkantay have a bright future in Ruby’s coffee lineup.
