The Pangoa co-operative’s numbers have swelled and receded. At one time, the membership was 1700 strong, though guerilla warfare expanding through the countryside in the 1980s pushed many farmers toward cities. Armed with an agronomy degree, Esperanza Dionisio Castillo returned back to the farmlands where she grew up, and helped establish herself as a coffee technician. Assuming a leadership role at Pangoa, Esperanza’s initiatives have made this amazing coffee from Eulogia possible to exist for Ruby to purchase as a separate lot.
