A DELIGHTFUL CUP OF JAVA:
AN ELEGANT EXPRESSION OF A UNIQUE VARIETY
Finca Rosita is a 32 hectare farm in the Illimani community. Located in Caranavi, Bolivia’s foremost coffee producing region, Illimani is located at the base of the second highest peak in all of Bolivia and means ”Where the sun rises” in the native tongue of the Aymara people. The Farm is named in memory of Rosa Angelica Aramayo, the matriarch of the Valverde-Aramayo family. This area of the Andes is marked by large plantations of potatoes and quinoa alongside plantations of coffee, plantain, and yucca. While many farms have diverse crops, Finca Rosita is dedicated to growing coffee, including many boutique varieties. Mile-high elevations, warm days, and cool nights are part of the recipe for such high quality and intriguing coffee.
Over the past 15 years, coffee has become central to Caranavi’s identity. The town proudly embraces its role as Bolivia’s coffee capital, with cafés, events, and competitions reflecting a strong local passion and pride in coffee production. A younger generation is stepping in, with many producers now in their 30s and 40s, pointing to a promising future for Bolivian coffee.
Part of what makes this particular lot remarkable is the variety, being composed entirely of Java beans. These large, elongated beans can be traced back to an old world Ethiopian land-race known as Abysinia. According to World Coffee Research, the variety has gone through centuries of selection since being brought to the island of Java in the early 1800s, and later Cameroon. It has been recognized for high disease resistance and exceptional quality at high altitudes, rivaling that of geishas. Costa Rica and Panama were the first Latin countries to start bringing Java to their soils, and now it can be found across Latin America, including Bolivia.
Java grown in Bolivia tends to have a smooth and mellow profile. This lot from Finca Rosita is truly a special microlot. This cup has an elegant body, with notes of apple pie, cashew butter, nougat and milk chocolate.
