Burka Estate: Cultivating Coffee Since 1899

Burka Estate is one of the most established and prominent coffee producers in Tanzania, with roots going back to 1899. It’s located in the northern highlands on the slopes of Mount Meru, just outside the city of Arusha. Today, the estate manages over 340 hectares of Arabica coffee, having expanded in 1990 through the acquisition of the neighboring Selian Estate. While Arusha’s continued growth has reduced the overall size of the farm, Burka remains a central figure in Tanzania’s coffee landscape.

In the past, coffee throughout Tanzania was often processed using a method closer to wet hulling. This gave the coffee a distinct character but sometimes led to instability in aging. Producers like Burka have since transitioned to an ultra-clean washed process, allowing for more clarity and consistency in the final cup.

During the harvest season, the estate employs up to 2,000 seasonal workers, in addition to their 200 permanent staff and 300 task specialists. Two on-site wet mills handle the processing. After pulping, the coffee is fermented overnight to break down sugars, washed in channels and soaking tanks, and then dried on raised beds. The drying process can take 7 to 15 days, with constant sorting and turning to ensure even results. Waste water from processing is carefully managed and recycled to minimize environmental impact.

Burka’s longstanding presence, combined with a commitment to thoughtful innovation, makes it a standout producer in East Africa. Their focus on clean processing and environmental stewardship continues to move Tanzanian coffee forward while honoring more than a century of tradition.
