We have another exciting Bolivia lot to share from the Caranavi region. This year’s lot comes from the community of Taipiplaya. Our import partners at Red Fox have been working with communities in the Caranavi region to increase access to specialty markets for the region’s smallholder indigenous growers. In the past, these communities have been practically inaccessible due to extreme geography and lack of infrastructure. Production has been low due to coffee tree diseases and changes in the post-harvest entities responsible for processing and export from the region.

Over the past few decades, various NGOS and government agencies from the U.S. and Europe have worked in the region to encourage coffee production and reduce production of coca. While these organizations have a much smaller presence now or are no longer involved, they did provide capital for infrastructure and training. Now, the local municipalities and the Bolivian government are doing what they can to incentivize coffee production.

With many new farms popping up, and farms being passed down to new generations, coffee production is getting competitive. Through locally sponsored competitions and events, Caranavi is embracing its coffee identity, even gaining the nickname “Bolivian Coffee Capitol.” It is exciting to see younger generations getting involved in coffee farming, with many being in their 30s and 40s. The immense knowledge bank of the local growers combined with access to technology allowing them to connect to a global network other producers puts these young farmers in a unique position. Experimentation with coffee processing is only just beginning and the possibilities for high quality coffee continue to expand.

This community lot comes from coffee grown by 40 smallholder farmers around Taipiplaya, most of which utilize traditional shade-grown methods for coffee production. The average farm is 2 or 3 hectares (approx. 5-8 acres) and has diverse crops that include coffee, pineapple, citrus, and a small amount of coca allowed by the government. Coffee cherries are harvested during the day, sometimes by the producer’s family, but most often by hired “cosechadores.” Most producers do not have the capacity to mill their own coffee so it is sold in cherry form. The cherries are trucked into the town collection sites by Toyota vans, heavily reinforced to handle the weight. Cherry is collected from 5pm into the night. After a dry fermentation period in steel tanks lasting 12-14 hours, the coffee is depulped, fully washed, and left to dry on raised beds for 15-20 days.

While Bolivia has a fairly established history of producing coffee, it is still new to the Ruby lineup. This is our second year featuring a community lot from Caranavi and we hope you enjoy exploring the coffee of this beautiful region of Bolivia along with us.
